ABOUT
The launch of Truth in Photography marks the 35th year of Documentary Arts, the non-profit organization I founded in 1985 to broaden public knowledge and appreciation of the arts of diverse cultures in all media. Over the years, Documentary Arts has produced photography, films, videos, radio features, audio recordings, public programs, educational initiatives, websites, exhibitions, catalogues, books, and interactive multimedia. Documentary Arts is a loosely connected global network of artists, photographers, filmmakers, scholars, curators, cultural specialists, social activists, historians, folklorists, archivists, teachers, and community educators.
The idea for Truth in Photography began in conversations with Mark Lubell (International Center of Photography) and evolved through an ongoing dialogue with Pauline Vermare (Magnum Photos), Chris Boot (Aperture Foundation), Kristen Lubben and Susan Meiselas (Magnum Foundation), Paddy Bowman and Lisa Rathje (Local Learning), Thomas Allen Harris (Family Pictures USA), and Andrew Lewin.
Truth in Photography will be updated quarterly. With each new edition, we plan to present different curatorial perspectives, featuring Magnum Photos, Aperture Foundation, and International Center of Photography, in addition to work by vernacular, community, and fine art photographers.
In Truth in Photography, various themes have been identified as points of emphasis. Clearly, photographers are complex individuals and are not easily grouped into thematic silos. The focus of the images they make vary as they respond to the vast landscape of human experience. The themes presented here are not definitive, but instead are intended to provide a forum for discussion and debate. We invite your participation through comments, suggestions, and the presentation of images that challenge us to rethink historical issues and contemporary concerns.
